Woolly Mammoth

Confession time: I am a hairy woman. I often feel like a caveman, or better yet, a Woolly Mammoth. Maybe if I lived in the Arctic, I would be a little more appreciative of my hairiness, but let’s get real, I live in Texas!

If you are anything like me, I can shave first thing in the morning and by the evening I already feel prickly! I feel like I spend so much of my morning shaving just to have smooth, silky legs. I am really weird about textures and hate the feeling of having prickly legs when wearing jeans, leggings, or tights. For this reason, I pretty much shave every day. I’ve tried Nair in the past, but that “burns like the dickens”, as my mom would say. In my mind, the next logical step was to try waxing. Maybe I should have eased myself in to the whole waxing thing, but I just went straight for the Brazilian. I remember the waxing girl looking a little surprised that for my first waxing I was going completely bare. Needless to say, getting a Brazilian is not a walk in the park. I was literally sweating and clenching my teeth, but I must be a glutton for punishment because I kept going back. As I was in college at this point, I wanted to try and save some money, so I decided to purchase my own waxing kit. I thought it would be a great idea to buy my own waxing kit so I could do my own Brazilians. Literally, this was the worst idea in my life. I made a pact with myself the day I attempted my own Brazilian… NEVER AGAIN. After this whole failed attempt of trying to save money, I decided enough was enough, I’m doing laser hair removal. I have been absolutely pleased with my results from laser hair removal thus far. The number of sessions is variable from person to person. It all depends on the color of your skin and the color of your hair. Here’s some more information of laser hair removal.

What is laser hair removal?

The Mayo Clinic (2018) defines laser hair removal as a medical procedure that uses a concentrated beam of light (laser) to remove unwanted hair.

How does laser hair removal work?

The Mayo Clinic (2018) comes in clutch again and given an excellent explanation as to how this process works. “During laser hair removal, a laser emit a light that is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair. The light energy is converted to heat, which damages the tube-shaped sacs within the skin (hair follicles) that produce hairs. This damage inhibits or delays future hair growth” (Mayo Clinic, 2018).

Is laser hair removal right for you?

If you are tired of shaving or waxing then laser hair removal is absolutely right for you. Make an appointment at your local medical spa or dermatologist for a consultation. It is imperative that you do your research and find a well established clinic with experienced laser technicians. In order for the treatments to be effective and prevent skin irritation/pigmentation changes, the laser hair removal machine must have the correct settings.

Like I said previously, I am so happy that I chose to do laser hair removal. I had my treatments done at the National Laser Institute in Dallas (http://nlimedspa.com). The National Laser Institute is a training facility as well. I actually went through the training classes and learned how to do botox, fillers, and laser therapies. With this being said, if you choose to go to the National Laser Institute, you can schedule your appointment with the training side or with the private side. Although the training side is cheaper, you will have a room full of students in addition to the expert laser technician. If you are doing an area like your legs or underarms, I would say save some money and schedule with the training side. If you are doing a more private area, go with the private side. Either way, the choice is yours.
